The project proposal asks you to think about how to use your own power as “good citizens” to identify ways you might act to address an issue in their community. you will prepare a paper that clearly defines and frames a key policy or civic issue that impacts a community close to them and outlines a proposed project that works to address the issue. you should explore the notions of power using Eric Liu and Vaclav Havel readings.
This paper should:
Define the key problem or civic issue for study;
Explain why this problem or civic issue requires civic action;
Identify what entities are currently addressing the issue and what actions are working and which are not sufficient;
What are the project and strategy being proposed to address the issue;
What evidence can support the basis for the proposed action?
You should have at least five academic/policy sources that include comparative data on the issue or similar issues.
The grading rubric will incorporate the following:
Identified a problem and the underlying causes of the problem/challenge within a particular community.
Situated that problem in broader research including comparative data.
Identified a clear civic response and proposed project addressing the issue.
Identified key community stakeholders and the roles they play.
Outlined a project with clear goals and potential outcomes.
Offered comparative examples of programs or projects that are working to address the issue.
Comparative data or evidence to support the proposed project.
Project Proposals Workbook Assignments: The final paper will be in part based on project workbooks that you will develop for their own community-based project proposals.
These project workbook assignments include:
Mind Mapping: identify and define an issue within a community that you want to work and begin developing a project idea
Community Mapping: research and identify available community resources within the geographic area where you can develop your project
Engaged Research: using academic sources, define the proximate problem and underlying issues (can include comparative data).
Interview: use the community map to find a civic actor to interview. Ideally, this should be someone from your community partner.
