In this Capstone CTE, you’ll demonstrate your mastery of the three ethical principles we’ve been studying. In each of the previous CTEs, you described and applied one ethical principle per scenario. With this Capstone CTE, you’ll describe and apply all three principles to a scenario. Refer to CTE 1, 2, and 3 submissions and the feedback that was provided to ensure you accurately and thoroughly describe and apply each principle.
At the end of Chapter 8, there are several critical thinking exercises. Choose one of them for your informal 3-5 page paper (1” margins, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font). Please see template directions highlighted in yellow below.
Begin with a summary of the scenario.
Identify all relevant facts and the moral question to be answered.
Apply virtue ethics to the scenario and provide a thorough explanation describing how the actions of the actor(s) did or did not meet the standards of virtue ethics. Include a discussion of its key concepts.
Apply formalism to the scenario and provide a thorough explanation describing how the actions of the actor(s) did or did not meet the standards of formalism. Include a discussion of its key concepts.
Apply utilitarianism to the scenario and provide a thorough explanation describing how the actions of the actor(s) did or did not meet the standards of utilitarianism. Include a discussion of its key concepts.
Summarize your paper and include your thoughts concerning the ethical/unethical “findings” of the three principles. (Example: If the actions taken were ethical or unethical through the lens of each principle, do you agree or disagree with that finding? Why?)
SCENARIO CHOSEN BELOW:
“The cable television show “Beyond Scared Straight” portrays teens being intimidated by offenders who hope to “scare them straight.” Critics of the show say it publicizes a discredited and harmful practice. In addition, the government does not fund jail tour programs like this, citing both research evidence that it doesn’t work, and also the liability jails take on when they invite minors to meet with inmates.
Some believe the program’s ineffectiveness in reducing delinquency is caused by the fact that juveniles harden their bravado in response to aggressive “in-your-face” tactics. Studies that follow the juveniles after the Scared Straight program show that some teens actually do worse than others after exposure to this kind of program, because they affiliate themselves with the aggressive inmates.
Anthony Petrosino, a researcher of scared straight studies stated, “This program doesn’t have any positive effect and it may very well hurt the kids that are in the program.” He said that Scared Straight is seen as a discredited program, because it has no effect on deterring crime, and it actually leads to more offending behavior. Dr. Delbert Elliott, founding director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, said, “We’ve got a TV production that’s promoting a program which is doing harm to our children.”45
