The Galileo Databases

2000-Level Research Paper Minimum Requirements

Your focus/paper topic must be based off of something included in the anthologies. You are welcome to write about anything we covered in class or a work from the anthologies of your own choosing. You are encouraged (but not required) to write about a work you have been focusing upon in earlier papers from this class.

The other 4 sources must act as commentary upon the work and/or an issue arising from the primary work. Another name for these 4 sources is “secondary,” “scholarly,” or “critical” sources.

The length of the paper is the agreed upon length noted in the syllabus plus the Works Cited page.

I need 5 different, relevant, responsible sources integrated smoothly and clearly throughout your paper. Again, one source is your primary work from our anthology.

Introduce your quotes with brief signal phrases and cite very clearly. It should be easy for me to determine which source you are quoting from throughout your paper every time you quote from your sources, both the primary anthology work and the secondary stuff.

While I encourage a variety of responsible secondary, critical sources, the ease of use of the Academic Search Complete database (which you can access from Galileo, D2L/Brightspace, or the Library’s website) is hard to beat. You can trust what you find on these databases; the internet is another matter: .coms such as the dreaded Wikipedia are NOT acceptable sources. The most responsible research includes peer-reviewed scholarly sources found on the Galileo databases.

Make sure you clearly cite repeatedly from the five sources and, of course, interpret your quotes and findings. Block quote format when applicable, but do not go overboard with excessive long quotes.

List these sources alphabetically according to MLA guidelines on your Works Cited page, which is the last page of your paper after the minimum page requirment.

Also consult the PowerPoint I have gone over in class and posted here on D2L/Brightspace once available.
