Assignment – The project will be to build a unique and original 5-year strategic plan for some
publicly traded company. As a minimum, the body of the plan must cover the following:
a. Company history (brief) and recent developments and performance (past 2 years or
so).
b. SWOT analysis including internal and external conditions that will drive success over
the next five years. (What are your core competencies and competitive advantages or
disadvantages? What is the internal structure and culture of the firm that will affect
success? What external conditions influence success ie; inflation, price of oil,
European debt, conflict in the Middle East, Chinese economy, etc.)
c. Industry Analysis (Use Porter’s 6-Forces to find your firm’s niche in the industry)
d. Market analysis to help identify potential market strengths and opportunities.
e. Strategic objectives over the five years with SMART goals to measure progress.
(What do you want to accomplish ie; average 15% growth rate, increase market share,
expand internationally, etc.)
f. Implementation plan exploring HOW you are going to execute your plan and what
resources you will need (what will you need to achieve these objectives ie; raise
capital, fund research & development, buildings, equipment, staffing, etc.)
g. Risk analysis (What are the greatest risks or threats to the success of the plan?)
h. Financial projections (Beginning with the most recent annual income statement,
project earnings over the five-year planning period based on your objectives and
resource plan.) You need to establish measures that you can use to evaluate
performance over time.
3. Suggestion – You should watch this 6-minute video by Ian Heller where he describes some of
the most important components of a business strategy that you should consider.

4. Strategic Plan Presentation – The team will present the 5-year plan to the Company’s Board of
Directors (represented by the other students and myself as Chairman of the Board) during the last
class meeting. The presentation can be in the form of a formal PowerPoint presentation or
roundtable discussion, whichever the team is more comfortable with. I expect all team members
to have a part in the presentation. Bonus point will be awarded to the outstanding team making
the most effective presentation as determined by vote of students. For online sections, the
presentation will be conducted as a web conference using Zoom during the last week of the class
at a time most suitable to the most students.
5. Length – 2000 words minimum with no upper limit (standard 8.5” x 11” paper). Title page and
references are not included in the word count.

6. Layout – Must include: Title page**; Introduction***; Body of the plan with each section clearly
identified by a heading or subheading; References. (See pages 468 to 472 in your text to guide
you.)
7. References – Minimum number of references: 5 in addition to your textbook. Cite outside
sources to add strength and credibility to your argument but give credit to the authors. You may
use books, articles from periodicals or newspapers, and peer reviewed journals. Wikipedia and
YouTube are none of these and are not acceptable references for the paper. Some teams find a
good video on YouTube to spice up their presentations to illustrate some point which is
acceptable.
8. Graphics – Graphics, charts, pictures, and art are ok if they add to your discussion and help
clarify some point. APA says black & white only, but color is OK for this paper.
9. Subject – Must be a publicly traded company on United States stock exchanges.
10. Format – Double spaced; typewritten or computer printed.
11. Font – 12 pt. (Times New Roman)
12. Margins – 1” margins all around per APA
13. Boundaries – No geographical boundaries. You may go outside the USA for your subject and
research as long as stock is traded on U.S. stock exchanges.
14. Citations/References – Give credit for work that is not yours by citing the source in the body of
the paper and providing the complete reference in the reference section. See APA lite for  For more information on articles from periodicals check on this :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodical_literature
