The American Dream

Paper 1 Five Key Sentences Background: Examples

When you have drafts of these five sentences, you have an outline for Paper One.  Certainly,  you may change these sentences as you write the paper, edit it, completely change it, or tweak it.  It is very good practice to maintain this plan of five sentences as you write the overall paper to keep your organization on track.

Example of five sentences for P1.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is about how Jay Gatsby’s impossible obsession over his American dream destroyed him.

First, the dream is an ideal shared by most Americans as part of their culture.

Second, East and West Egg exemplify the ideas and values of the dream.

Third, the dream has a devastating effect on Jay Gatsby.

In conclusion, the novel narrates the destruction that results from confusing the ideal of a dream with an obsessive entitlement.

Technical point: if you use the correct set-up for the first sentence, you do not have to write the author’s name or the novel’s title again anywhere else in your paper.  Avoid this repetition because your reader remembers the author and title that you cited in your first sentence.  Avoid it not only because it serves no purpose but also because your repetition is distracting and takes away from your paper’s content.  Also avoid writing “the American dream” more than once.

If you use “the American dream” once when you introduce the idea and what it is, that is enough. Do not repeat more than that because the repetition creates an unintended effect of distraction for the reader.  Again, useless repetition is distracting.  Students have written “the American dream” as many as ten and 15 times in Paper One.  That is the kind of repetition that gets in the way of a paper’s content.  And, let us face it, a writer can write it  correctly and effectively two times, but continuing to write may lead the writer to making a completely unnecessary error–for examples not getting the punctuation correct for the American dream and “F. Scott Fitzgerald,” or “The Great Gatsby.”  Use the word “dream” or another term instead after using “the American dream” once or twice. For more information on the American dream check on this :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Dream
