Classmate’s post:
It is argued by Block (2010) that each act that expresses trust in ourselves and belief in the validity of our own experience is always the right path to follow. Each act that is manipulative or filled with pretense is always self-destructive. (p.10). This quotation set the tone and foundation for flawless consulting and offer the mentality for all beginners. After reading the text, I found that technical, interpersonal, and consulting skills will be valuable to me in the initial meeting with the sponsor. And all these three skills are hardcore and softcore for success at the end of the project.

Technical skills are our hard power to complete the project. As Block (2010) stated, “we need to know what the person is talking about. We need expertise about the question.” (p.8). If we don’t have the minimum expertise, it isn’t easy to communicate with our clients. From my point of view, I would review all the previous courses and the list of readings listed by the professor before doing the task. These can help me clarify my thinking and develop a systematic mindset. At the same time, I will observe all the previous cases to get a lot of inspiration from them, which will help me broaden my thinking. Finally, I also look at the experiences of students who have graduated to avoid some mistakes and improve efficiency. After doing this groundwork, I will at least show that I will professionally perform this task at the first meeting.

Interpersonal and consulting skills are the soft skills, but it determines the success. Regarding the interpersonal skills, I want to analyze my communication style before the first meeting and the contact’s communication style during the first meeting, all of which will improve the communication effectiveness at the rest of the project. Concerning the consulting skill, Since the textbook doesn’t explain much, I thought it was essential to figure out my role in the project for the first meeting with the contact person. In his lecture, Powers (2021) stressed that consultants are proactive advisors and do not follow orders; in the meetings with the contacts, I have to make suggestions, not just do whatever they say.

As to How I can confirm if I were successful at the end of the first communication, I would ask the contact if they have any concerns about the projects or other feedback, and if not, I think at least the first meeting was successful. Some other body movements and facial micro-expressions can reflect the contact’s attitude toward the first communication.

Before defining the scope and deliverables of the project, I would funnel data and make sense of it. Through my analysis, if I don’t meet the sponsor’s expectations, I will communicate with him to scale back the scope. Instead, I will confirm with him the current scope in text form.
