Essay 1 Draft 1 (for Peer Review):
Length: 4-5 pages.
Formatting: use 1″ margins on all sides, double-spaced with a 12pt font (preferably Times New Roman).
The assignment requires that you use the assigned readings, Lectures/Discussions, the Weeks 1-4 Questions to Consider, documentaries and/or other assigned media. Do Not Use Any Outside Sources!
NOTE: You will also have an opportunity to integrate info into your Essay from the assigned readings, Lectures/Discussions and Questions to Consider from Week 5 and you will have an opportunity to do it before you submit the second draft of Essay 1.
Essay 1 Draft 1 (for Peer Review) will be due in class for Thursday, September 30th. Please bring to hard copies of your draft to class.
The Prompt for Essay 1:
At the start of the 19th century, American republican ideals rested on a firm foundation of individual property rights and the freedom of independent producers (farmers and artisans). But slavery, civil war and the transformations taking place in the workplace—much of it due to rapid industrialization—fundamentally changed our understanding of American republicanism. The rapid transformations and reinterpretations of republicanism were often fought out in the workplace and political arena.
You job is to explain:
Why the early 19th century artisan/farmer republican ideals were increasingly out of step with the realities of the mid-to-late 19th century industrial workplace; and
How the tensions between worker republicanism (or what we have referred to as “labor republicanism”) and employer republicanism were expressed over time and at least temporarily settled by the end of the 19th
Start your essay with an introductory paragraph that includes a thesis statement at the end of the paragraph. The thesis statement is the basic argument you will be making in the paper and it should summarize the key factor(s) that you believe created the tension between the competing versions of republicanism and how they were “temporarily settled.”
Each of the subsequent body paragraphs should follow a logical progression and be in direct support of your argument. Support your points with specific examples from the reading, “rifts,” documentaries or other media clips. When quoting material in your essay from assigned readings or referencing a video rift or documentary, insert the citation into the appropriate place in the paragraph in a parenthesis. For example, if you are quoting material from page 32 of the textbook, use the following format:
“In just over thirty years of industrial growth, a modern working class and a new business elite had emerged in a nation that had once been dominated by farmers, merchants, and small-town artisans” (WBA, p.32).
Here are examples of citations from the textbook and other sources:
Quote from an assigned article with an author – (Brecher, p. 13)
Quote from an assigned article without an author – (Statement from the Pullman Strikers, p. 236)
Reference to a documentary – (The Homestead Strike Documentary, Week 4)
Rift Comment – (Martino, Week 3)
Complete the essay with a concluding paragraph that restates/summarizes the thesis statement in the light of the evidence which you have provided in the body paragraphs. You may also want to draw some lessons from the argument you’ve made, point to where things were headed going into the dawn of the 20th century, identify themes that seem to carry forward into the present, etc.
Finally, a Works Cited page will not be necessary since we will all be working with info from the readings and no other outside sources.
Note: Although the above prompt has two parts, I only want one essay that has one intro and one conclusion.) And again, do not use any outside sources to answer the prompt!
