The Purpose:
Almost always the purpose of process writing is to explain, but sometimes it also includes the need to prove something about a process or to evaluate it—learning to change a tire is a safety necessity or developing a small community service project can still benefit a community.
Thesis Statement:
Your thesis should guide your writing and tell your reader what to expect. State you process and outline its basic stages, but also convey your purpose for writing about it. Is a seemingly difficult process quite simple? Does it demonstrate a more general principle? Is it actually inefficient or unfair? Make it clear your process has a point.
The Essay:
Your introduction needs to arouse your audience’s interest, establish the subject of your essay and the purpose. Don’t say, “The reason I am writing this essay is . . ..” Be subtler and weave your reason for writing into the essay.
Keep in mind in this type of writing the organizing principle is always chronological. Make sure the sequence is accurate. Most can be divided into phases or stages. Remember to pause in your process to provide definition of terms or explain why a step is necessary and how it relates to the step before or after.
To ensure the reader can duplicate the process and understand how it unfolds, you must fully detail each step and specify the reasons for it. You must also ensure the reader grasps the sequence of steps, the duration, and where they occur. Use transitional expressions to unify those stages.
Although it is tempting in this form of writing to write in the second person (‘you,” “your,” “yourself”), write this paper in the third person; do not use “you” or “I” in this paper!
