Step 1: Read the following case study:
In a local home healthcare agency, nurses are using their personal cell phones to email and text physicians, the agency, and local hospitals. The agency is considering providing the nurses company cell phones with a secure login. There are advantages and disadvantages of each option.
Step 2: Answer the following questions. Please consider impact of use, tracking of information, security, education, cost, and maintenance.
1. What are the advantages of using company devices for professional communication?
2.What are the disadvantages of using company devices for professional communication?
3.If you were the agency, would you choose personal or company devices? Explain your choice.

“ Professor Ridley and Class,
Advances in technology have changed practically every aspect of the healthcare system. However, with every advancement, we must keep in mind the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality, especially when it comes to the use of personal devices. The use of personal smartphones has been a short of gray area within the healthcare world as far as I can tell but has led to many facilities developing policies to address this issue (Chamberlain. 2021). These agencies must also consider the benefits and disadvantages of allowing staff to use personal or company-provided cell phones to communicate with other providers.
Flynn et al. (2018) found that nurses using smartphones were more satisfied with the ease of communication with providers, especially since they could have their numbers pre-programmed which saves time. Nurses could also take a photograph of a wound or diagnostic test result and send it directly to the necessary provider which saves time and improves continuity of care. Some nurses have even been known to use their smartphones as translator devices to communicate with patients.
The main issue with personal phone use is the potential to violate HIPAA regulations by either sending a message to the wrong person or having your personal phone viewed by someone who should not have access to patient information. Due to this, I would prefer a company-provided cellphone with enhanced safety features that don’t leave the facility, and they would be a major upgrade from the spectra link phones my hospital currently uses. Another concern with the use of personal phones is the potential for distraction because the nurse can receive personal texts, notifications from social media, or play games. Company devices would be the ideal solution, providing the functions that make our jobs easier with none of the drawbacks.
